Aluminum Recovery in the Recycling Process of Photovoltaic Panels

From March5 to 7, 2025, the 17th edition of the K-Energy exhibition washeld at the Rimini Exhibition Center, a key event for the renewable energysector, featuring participation from leading players in the photovoltaic andwind power industries.

Among thehighlights of the event, Stokkermill Recycling Machinery showcasedits innovative solutions for the recycling of photovoltaic and solar panels, including both monocrystalline and polycrystalline models.

Stokkermill:Innovation and Leadership in Photovoltaic Panel Recycling

Foryears, Stokkermill has been committed to establishing itself as aleader in the production of machinery and plants for photovoltaic panelrecycling, offering solutions characterized by high efficiency and ease ofuse.

One of thecompany's main strengths is its ability to design and manufacture the coremachines that make up its recycling lines in-house. This approach not onlyallows for a high degree of customization but also significantlyreduces production costs.

Efficiencyand Economic Value of Recycling

Stokkermill's photovoltaicpanel recycling lines are custom-built to meet customer needs, ensuring aminimum processing capacity of 1,500 kg/h. These plants are designed toprocess both monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels of any size, withor without aluminum frames.

Recyclingpanels with their aluminum frames offers a significant economicadvantage, as it allows for the recovery of high-quality furnace-readyaluminum, maximizing the value of the recycled material.

Thebenefits of processing panels with the frame attached are twofold:

  • Eliminates the costs and time     required for manual frame removal.
  • The value of furnace-ready     aluminum ("proler") is significantly higher than the aluminum     profile obtained from de-framing. Currently, the market prices     furnace-ready aluminum at approximately €2,000-2,100 per ton, whereas     aluminum profiles obtained from de-framing are valued at     around €1,400-1,500 per ton. Given the average weight of an aluminum     frame, the additional profit per panel processed with its     frame is about €1.50.

GlassFraction Quality and Silicon Recovery

The qualityof the glass fraction obtained from the recycling process is ensured bythe delaminating mill, developed and refinedby Stokkermill based on its well-established HM series scrapmills.

Alsonoteworthy is the silicon/glass powder, a material with significantmarket value, which is expected to increase again in the coming years.

Ease ofUse and Focus on Energy Efficiency

Stokkermill’srecycling plants are designed to be operated by a maximum of twoworkers: one dedicated to machine control and material loading, and the otherresponsible for handling the processed materials.

The energyconsumption for recycling a single panel is less than 1 kWh, making it a highlyefficient process both environmentally and economically. Energy-intensiveor high-impact processes would undermine the overall benefits of recycling.

Tomeet higher production demands, these plants are designed to operateon a three-shift basis. Additionally, all components are engineeredfor quick and simple maintenance, which can be performed by the userwithout the need for specialized technicians.

Versatilityand Adaptability of Recycling Plants

Flexibility isone of the key aspects of Stokkermill’s plant design. The photovoltaicpanel recycling lines are designed to process a wide range of modules, including:

  • Monofacial     and bifacial panels
  • Amorphous     and polycrystalline panels
  • Panels with or without aluminum     frames
  • Damaged panels, with no need     for specific pre-treatments

In additionto photovoltaic panels, Stokkermill’s plants can process othermaterials, such as aluminum scrap and profiles, industrial radiators, andWaste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), based on the specificneeds of the customer.
