In the circular economy and energy transition landscape, the recycling of spent batteries represents a crucial technological challenge and a high-value industrial opportunity. Batteries, whether lithium (Li-ion), contain valuable components such as plastic, aluminum, conductive copper, and black mass, a rich mixture of strategic metals including lithium, cobalt, nickel, and manganese.
Stokkermill develops tailor-made plants and solutions for the treatment of spent batteries, ensuring efficient and safe separation of the different material fractions. Each process step is designed to maximize recovery and preserve the value of secondary raw materials.
The batteries are fed into low-speed shredders, which are ideal for reducing the material to a controlled size and ensuring initial separation of the components. This step is essential to free the internal fractions and prepare them for further treatment in complete safety.
Through mills and granulators, materials are refined and made homogeneous. Plastics are separated by density and specific weight, while copper is recovered through electromagnetic systems, screening and eddy current separators, ensuring high purity.
Black mass-composed of fine powders containing critical metals-is isolated through dry separation systems, which avoid contamination and preserve its quality. This material is destined for chemical refining processes for selective metal recovery.
Our plants are modular, scalable and customizable according to the type of battery treated and recovery goals. Configurations can be adapted for:
- Lithium batteries (Li-ion, LFP, NMC)
- Mixed batteries from WEEE
🟢 Separation efficiency of more than 98%.
🟢 Optimization of operating costs
🟢 Compact and modular design
🟢 Compliance with European environmental regulations
🟢 Reduction of environmental risk and hazardous waste
The growing global demand for batteries (EVs, renewables, electronics) makes recovery of critical materials crucial for competitiveness and secure supply.
