Solar panel recycling - Silicon quality as a goal

In solar panel recycling, the quality and concentration of the recovered silicon are key indicators of a plant's efficiency and sustainability.

The Stokkermill Solar Solution

Stokkermill Solar HMS and XRS delaminators set the new technological standard for the recovery of highly concentrated silicon for industrial use. The Stokkermill Solar photovoltaic recycling system is designed to completely eliminate preliminary manual operations: no removal of the aluminum frame, no separation of the glass before delamination.

The Process

The photovoltaic panel is entirely processed in the HMS primary delaminator, available in different power and capacity configurations.During this phase, the material is reduced in size and the aluminum frame is automatically removed, producing an End-of-Waste metal fraction ready for reuse in steelmaking processes.

A distinctive feature of the Stokkermill process is the controlled heating generated inside the HMS delaminator. The heat facilitates the separation of the glass fraction from the EVA film without removing the valuable silicon powder, which accounts for approximately 8-10% of the total weight of the panel.

Preserving this fraction means maximizing economic and environmental recovery and reducing the loss of high-value material. The final stage takes place in the XRS secondary delaminator, where the material is separated and finished with precision, avoiding dispersion and obtaining a highly concentrated silicon fraction.

Laboratory analyses conducted on Stokkermill plants confirm that the recovered silicon is more concentrated, stable, and valuable than that obtained with traditional systems, which involve manual removal and crushing phases.
